2009. 08. 05.-i levél:

There's been a lot of media coverage about organized mobs intimidating lawmakers, disrupting town halls, and silencing real discussion about the need for real health insurance reform.

The truth is, it's a sham. These "grassroots protests" are being organized and largely paid for by Washington special interests and insurance companies who are desperate to block reform. They're trying to use lies and fear to break the President and his agenda for change.

Health insurance reform is about our lives, our jobs, and our families -- we can't let distortions and intimidation get in the way. We need to expose these outrageous tactics, and we're counting on you to help. Can you read these "5 facts about the anti-reform mobs," then pass them along to your friends and family?

5 facts about the anti-reform mobs

1. These disruptions are being funded and organized by out-of-district special-interest groups and insurance companies who fear that health insurance reform could help Americans, but hurt their bottom line. A group run by the same folks who made the "Swiftboat" ads against John Kerry is compiling a list of congressional events in August to disrupt. An insurance company coalition has stationed employees in 30 states to track where local lawmakers hold town-hall meetings.

2. People are scared because they are being fed frightening lies. These crowds are being riled up by anti-reform lies being spread by industry front groups that invent smears to tarnish the President's plan and scare voters. But as the President has repeatedly said, health insurance reform will create more health care choices for the American people, not reduce them. If you like your insurance or your doctor, you can keep them, and there is no "government takeover" in any part of any plan supported by the President or Congress.

3. Their actions are getting more extreme. Texas protesters brought signs displaying a tombstone for Rep. Lloyd Doggett and using the "SS" symbol to compare President Obama's policies to Nazism. Maryland Rep. Frank Kratovil was hanged in effigy outside his district office. Rep. Tim Bishop of New York had to be escorted to his car by police after an angry few disrupted his town hall meeting -- and more examples like this come in every day. And they have gone beyond just trying to derail the President's health insurance reform plans, they are trying to "break" the President himself and ruin his Presidency.

4. Their goal is to disrupt and shut down legitimate conversation. Protesters have routinely shouted down representatives trying to engage in constructive dialogue with voters, and done everything they can to intimidate and silence regular people who just want more information. One attack group has even published a manual instructing protesters to "stand up and shout" and try to "rattle" lawmakers to prevent them from talking peacefully with their constituents.

5. Republican leadership is irresponsibly cheering on the thuggish crowds. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner issued a statement applauding and promoting a video of the disruptions and looking forward to "a long, hot August for Democrats in Congress."

It's time to expose this charade, before it gets more dangerous. Please send these facts to everyone you know. You can also post them on your website, blog, or Facebook page.

Now, more than ever, we need to stand strong together and defend the truth.

Thanks,

Jen

As the Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner could use his important position to forge honest consensus around reforms that most Americans overwhelmingly support. Sadly, Boehner is choosing to be a leading peddler of health reform lies instead.

When Boehner repeated his claim that reform would result in a government takeover of health care, it was clear he's been too busy trying to score political points to read the overwhelming evidence -- including a post from the non-partisan FactCheck.org -- debunking this claim.

And cruelly scaring seniors with lies about benefit cuts, even though his own party voted to gut Medicare? On his side of the aisle, that's become standard operating procedure.

Then of course there's Boehner's blatant lie that reform will provide taxpayer-funded abortions, a claim rejected even by groups that oppose abortion. His lies have been thoroughly debunked, but John Boehner just won't stop -- so we're calling him out.

Call 'em Out: John Boehner. Watch the video, spread the word, write a letter.

"Call 'em out" is our new campaign to expose Republican officials who lie about health reform, and we've got the attention of the media and GOP politicians alike. MSNBC noted that Democrats were going on the offensive, and thousands of folks like you called Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and told him to stop lying about reform.

Now it's John Boehner's turn. Share our video about how Boehner won't tell the truth about reform. Spread the word to your friends on Twitter and Facebook. Write a letter to the editor setting the record straight.

While thousands of Americans go without desperately needed care and millions more wonder if their coverage will be there if they get sick, John Boehner's only "plan" is to lie and spread falsehoods to score political points.

We're not going to take it. We're calling him out:

A gross distortion." "Pants on fire!" "False." That's what the independent PolitiFact site said about Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann's health reform lies.

In fact, PolitiFact has rated six of her statements, and all of them have been either "false" or "pants on fire" false. As PolitiFact's Bill Adair said, "she has the distinction of a perfect record."

Let that sink in for a second. Together, we've made thousands of calls and written hundreds of letters calling out folks who are lying about reform. But Bachmann is in a class all to herself.

Too many Americans live with the painful consequences of our broken health care system to let Bachmann's reckless lies go unchecked. So this week, we're calling her out.

Call 'em out: Michele Bachmann. Watch the video, call her office, spread the word.

In the last week, while Republicans such as former Senator Bill Frist and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson were putting progress ahead of partisanship by speaking constructively about reform, Rep. Bachmann was on the floor of the House of Representatives spreading fear and lies yet again.

And Bachmann specializes in making lies personal -- like her outrageous claim that Ezekiel Emanuel, one of President Obama's health care advisers, believes health care should be reserved for the non-disabled -- so "watch out if you're disabled." ("We rule Bachmann's statement 'False,'" says PolitiFact).

Bachmann has promoted the death panels lie ("False," say the Associate Press and New York Times). She's lied about illegal immigrants receiving taxpayer-subsidized care under reform. And she claimed reform was a "national takeover of health care." The nonpartisan FactCheck.org plainly refuted her on both accounts.

Last week, she even claimed reform will create "sex clinics" at schools, allowing students to have abortions without parental consent. That earned her one of her many "pants on fire!" false ratings from PolitiFact.

It all adds up to someone who will tell any lie, distort any fact, and shamelessly scare folks about reform in order to kill it. We've had enough -- so we're calling her out:

A lot of folks use Facebook to stay in touch with friends and family. For Sarah Palin, it's a great way to spread lies about health insurance reform.

A few months back, Palin took to Facebook to declare that health reform would create "death panels," and drive private insurers out of business -- and nonpartisan fact-check sites and the independent Congressional Budget Office debunked those lies.

But that hasn't stopped Sarah Palin. She's back with a new Facebook note claiming that reform will raise costs on families and drive up deficits. Unfortunately for her, even the conservative "Tax Foundation" says those claims are false.

So we're calling out Sarah Palin, and taking to Facebook to debunk her lies on the very same pages she's using to spread them.

Call 'em out: Sarah Palin. Watch the video, make a call, spread the word on Facebook.

We've put together a short Facebook note cataloging just some of Sarah Palin's many distortions and the facts that prove her wrong. But we need your help to "share" the note and make sure she doesn't get away with her outrageous lies.

If Sarah Palin wants to spread lies on Facebook, we'll call her out in the very same place. And when thousands of folks share our note and expose her lies, it will be clear that those who lie about reform will be held accountable -- no matter where they spread their misinformation.

The more we push back with the truth, the more Sarah Palin and others like her will have to think twice before they promote lies, and the less they'll be able to derail progress.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you can still help us call out Sarah Palin. Visit Call 'em Out: Sarah Palin to watch our video detailing her lies and to call Palin's political organization and say, "stop lying."

Rising health care costs are crushing American families and squeezing small businesses. Reform will reign in costs and cut the deficit in the long run -- that's why it's so important, and why Sarah Palin's lies are so malicious.

We're not letting it stand. We're calling Sarah Palin out:

The House Republicans just released their version of health reform. It's a disaster -- so outrageous that Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has dubbed it the "Health Insurance Company Protection Act" -- but Republicans are arguing it's the key to real reform.

So we're pushing back hard, with the top 5 reasons that the GOP bill fails America. Take a look at the list -- then pass it along to all your friends who need to know the facts.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says it would barely make a dent in most of our premiums, and could lead to higher premiums for older Americans.
The New York Times reports that it doesn't stop insurers from refusing to cover you because of a pre-existing condition.
The CBO's research shows that the GOP plan would likely cut the deficit by just $68 billion over the next ten years -- far less than the Democratic bill, which cuts the deficit by $104 billion over the same period.
The CBO also estimates that under the Republican bill the number of uninsured Americans would actually increase to 52 million by 2019.
And Politico writes that the Republican's so-called plan doesn't keep insurers from dropping you when you're sick -- it just makes them let you know that you're being dropped.
The Democratic bill in the House is what America actually needs. It stops insurance companies from refusing coverage because of a pre-existing condition. It prevents them from denying you care when you get sick. It will help lower premiums for our families and businesses, and will cover 33 million more people than the Republican bill.

Capitol Hill newspapers are reporting that the House may vote on a Democratic bill tomorrow. So it's especially crucial that we get the word out immediately. Please pass this along to everyone you know.

We did it. With House passage of health reform last weekend, we took a huge step toward providing affordable options to those without insurance, providing greater security for those who are already covered, and reducing costs for families and small businesses.

There have been many attempts in the last nearly 100 years, but Saturday's vote was the first time a chamber of Congress succeeded in passing comprehensive health reform. As President Obama wrote after the vote, "This is history."

But now we need to keep the pressure on -- and one of the best ways to show our support is to fill local newspapers across the country with letters about why we need reform now.

Take a few minutes to write a letter to the editor in support of health reform.

Your letter can tell a personal story about why health reform matters to you and your family, or explain how important it is that our representatives stand with their constituents and not the special interests.

After the House vote, there are three big steps left, and it's going to be a fight the whole way. Soon, the Senate will vote on its version of the bill, then there will be a round of negotiations to combine the two versions, and finally, each chamber will take a final vote.

It's going to be an uphill battle, but my experiences as governor have taught me that moments like this weekend's vote serve to motivate and spark action. When one chamber takes the first step, it encourages the other to quickly follow suit.

This is among the most critical issues facing our country today. I'm sure that years from now, we'll all look back on this as one of the most important fights of our life.

Let's make sure we give everything we can to keep the pressure on and win this thing:

Last Saturday night, at 11:15 p.m., the House of Representatives passed the Affordable Health Care for America Act -- becoming the first house of Congress to pass comprehensive health reform in American history.

For the preceding 12 hours, Republican representatives stood on the House floor and spouted callous and shameless lie after lie in a desperate, last-ditch effort to stop reform. Perhaps they thought that if enough of them lied enough times in a row, they could get away with it. They were wrong.

Watch our video showing all of the outrageous lies from the House debate -- and debunking each one.

A healthy, honest debate on the floor of Congress is essential to passing good laws -- but that's not what these Republicans showed up to do on Saturday night. We can't give up on the truth, so we're keeping President Obama's promise to call out those who cease debating on the merits and start lying about reform -- even when there are almost too many lies to count.

Health reform will have to pass the House once more before President Obama can sign it. So it's essential that we debunk this misinformation now so that swing members in Congress can sort out fact from fiction -- and so that those who would lie again know they will be held to account.

Check out the video, then use our "Call 'em Out" Twitter tool to tell the House G.O.P. what you think of their string of lies:

Our nation has been talking about comprehensive health insurance reform for nearly a century. And this time around, Congress has been debating it for almost 10 months.

But last Sunday, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said the whole process is just going too fast. He showed what's long been obvious: His strategy is to bury reform under endless delays and distortions.

McConnell seems willing to use every trick in the book to delay a fair debate on reform. Each day reform is postponed is another day for him to attack it with another distortion. It's a desperate gambit to confuse the American people, derail the effort in Congress, and block reform.

Mitch McConnell: We're calling you out.

Call 'em Out: Mitch McConnell. Watch the video -- then call McConnell's office and tell him to quit delaying reform.

McConnell claimed that health reform would cut Medicare. AARP says it isn't true -- and endorsed the bill in the House.

He trotted out the old "reform will drive insurers out of business" line. But the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that most people would still be covered by private health insurance.

And the one about reform forcing bureaucrats between doctors and patients? His predecessor as the Senate Republican leader, Bill Frist, recently said, "that's not what's in these bills."

We put together a video debunking all of McConnell's distortions -- watch and share it today. Then call McConnell's office and make sure he knows Americans won't sit idly by while he delays desperately needed reform.

Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn.

It's dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term "Death Panels" -- and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists.

Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform.

As we approach the final sprint on health reform, we can't afford more deception and delay. We need to be ready for anything -- and have the resources to respond with ads, events, and calls to Congress when the attacks come.

So we're setting a big goal: $500,000 in the next week to help push back against Sarah Palin and her allies. Please chip in $5 or more to help reach our goal.

Earlier this month, Palin publicly said that she hopes health reform will be "dead on arrival." And since then, she's been working fiercely toward that goal.

On Tuesday, Palin went on Rush Limbaugh's radio show where she outrageously -- and falsely -- suggested that Americans could "face jail time as punishment" if they don't buy insurance.

Palin has many more interviews scheduled on Hannity and other conservative shows in the next few weeks, with more platforms to go after the President. As soon as she does, the rest of our opponents will likely parrot those attacks.

We need to be prepared. And we're counting on you help. Can you chip in $5 or more?

Subject: One million calls

Friend --

If we don't pass health reform, millions of Americans will be trapped in a broken status quo, unable to pay their bills or see a doctor when they need one.

More and more employers will drop coverage for employees. And Medicare and Medicaid will blow a hole through our budget.

There's too much at stake not to get this done. That's why OFA supporters have made 849,856 calls to Congress in support of health reform since August.

And that's why today, with the Senate locked in last-minute negotiations, our goal is to hit one million calls.

Can you help? Click here to call your senators now and help us "ring in reform."

This holiday season, millions of Americans will go without desperately-needed care simply because they can't afford insurance.

But insurance lobbyists are desperate to pull apart the bill and derail reform, so your voice is needed now.

Many senators are already working hard for reform, and they deserve our thanks. The rest urgently need to hear that their constituents are counting on them to stand up for change.

Just dial the numbers above, then tell the staffers who answer where you live -- so that they know you are a constituent -- and that you support reform.

I just got up to Martha Coakley's campaign HQ to help her win Tuesday's crucial special election. I have to tell you -- this isn't like anything Massachusetts has ever seen.

It's happening right after the holidays, so a lot of people haven't even heard about it. Meanwhile, the same guys behind the Swift Boat ads are taking over the airwaves to distort Martha's record, and the same far-right tea-party crowd that's attacking President Obama is funding her opponent.

The stakes in this race are incredibly high. If we don't hold this seat, a right-wing Republican will hold Sen. Ted Kennedy's old seat until at least 2012 -- and we'll lose a crucial vote in the Senate for health reform and the agenda we fought so hard for last year.

That's why we're going all out in Massachusetts with a massive effort to lock up a Democratic victory. But we can only afford to keep this battle up against the far right through Election Day if folks like you chip in.

Please donate $5 or more to help us make Martha Coakley the next senator from Massachusetts.

Democratic ads are highlighting the key differences between Martha, a long-time public servant and one of the nation's best attorneys general, and her extreme Republican opponent who would walk in lockstep with Mitch McConnell and national GOP power brokers.

And our organizers are engaging volunteers by the thousands to make sure Obama voters make it back to the polls.

But we need your help to keep it going. Please donate $5 or more to the Democratic Party to support our work, including our efforts to elect Martha Coakley:

It goes without saying that we are disappointed by the result of the special election in Massachusetts.

There will be plenty of time to dissect this race and to apply the lessons learned from it in elections to come. But in the meantime, we will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of the American people, and we will redouble our efforts to lay out a clear choice for voters this November.

And while the path toward change has never been easy, there is always a way forward.

This Wednesday, the President will be delivering his first State of the Union address, where he will lay out that path -- and Democratic Party and Organizing for America supporters will be gathering together at State of the Union Watch Parties across the country.

Can you help out, by signing up to host one?

All you need is a place for folks to gather, a phone, and a TV to watch on. I'll be attending an event in St. Louis, and we'll help recruit supporters from your area to come to yours. Then we'll launch the next step in our work together.

These State of the Union Watch Parties are a great way for us all to play a role as we forge a path forward.

No experience is necessary to host a successful event -- once you sign up to host, a local organizer will be in touch about what to do next.

I know that folks are feeling down after Tuesday's loss. But our nation faces real challenges, and with your help President Obama will continue to tackle them head on.

It's a breathtaking display of public hypocrisy.

At least 116 Republican governors, senators, and representatives have spent the past year railing against the Recovery Act, while simultaneously requesting funds to create jobs in their districts and taking credit for projects at ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

As the independent PolitiFact put it, they're trying "have their cake... and vote against it too." They know the Recovery Act is creating jobs, but they think attacking it will bring them victory in the 2010 elections.

Not so fast. We're preparing to meet every hypocritical attack with press conferences in states across the nation and a rapid-response program to fact check every lie. But we need your help to make it happen.

Please donate $5 or more today to support our campaign against Recovery Act hypocrisy.

Today is the anniversary of the President signing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that has saved or created at least 2 million jobs, cut taxes for 95 percent of working families, and made loans to over 42,000 small businesses. And as a former governor, I can tell you it also provided critical relief for state governments facing record budget shortfalls.

But don't take it from me. Listen to Rep. Joe Wilson, who told the Department of Agriculture that the money he was seeking "would provide jobs and investment" for his South Carolina district. Or take it from Minnesota's Tim Pawlenty, who balanced his state budget with the same funds he's so often attacked on TV.

Even the GOP leadership that went all out to kill the bill has gotten into the game -- Sen. Mitch McConnell has bragged about funding for a military project in Kentucky, while Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor sought funds for a high-speed rail project in Virginia to create jobs.

President Obama has made it clear he knows that we're not out of the woods yet, and he's focused on creating jobs. Honesty with the American people is one of the obligations of leadership.

In stark contrast, Republicans are engaged in a hypocritical campaign of attacks -- and they're proving what we've said all along: Their opposition is about politics, pure and simple.

We're going to prove that it's not winning politics -- but we need your support to expose their hypocrisy:

Yesterday morning, President Obama unveiled his health reform proposal.

The President's health reform proposal builds upon existing legislation and includes provisions to cut waste, fraud, and abuse while making health care more affordable and available.

The proposal would set up a Health Insurance Rate Authority to regulate unreasonable rate hikes -- like the ones we just saw in California and Maine. It would amount to the biggest middle class tax cut for health care in our nation's history.

And it would help extend coverage to more than 31 million more Americans who are without health insurance today. We are closer than ever to reforming our broken health care system, and the President's proposal yesterday is the next big step to arriving at that goal.

Click here to find out what the President's proposal would mean for you.

Every day without reform is another day millions of Americans go without much-needed coverage or fear losing their coverage at the worst moment.

It's another day employers face skyrocketing costs and another day that some insurance companies will engage in unfair practices and unreasonable rate hikes. When a major health insurer notified California residents of premium increases of nearly forty percent this month, it showed again how urgently we need reform.

My hope is that Republicans will now set aside obstruction and partisan games and make a genuine effort to help pass meaningful reform on behalf of the American people -- starting with this Thursday's bipartisan health reform summit.

The President is continuing a proud legacy of pragmatic Democratic governance. He's listening to every idea put forward -- and we hope the final bill will include the best from both parties.

This proposal achieves the President's long-stated goals: Security for the insured, coverage for the uninsured and cost control for families and businesses. See how you would benefit from the President's plan:

For more than seven hours yesterday, President Obama led a vigorous, respectful, and historic discussion with representatives from both parties and houses in Congress about how best to reform this country's broken health insurance system.

At every opportunity, the President displayed genuine devotion to delving into the specifics of the proposals and sought, wherever possible, to resolve key differences and find common ground.

Watch highlights from the bipartisan meeting here.

While we are still far from resolving all of the differences between Republicans and Democrats on reforming our broken health insurance system, the meeting was a major step forward and a huge win for the American people.

The President continued to seek bipartisan agreement on issues of importance to the American people. Of course, differences do remain.

Democrats made the case for their comprehensive approach that lowers costs, increases coverage and curbs unfair and discriminatory insurance industry practices. The Republicans have not offered comprehensive counter-proposals that achieve these goals and continue to favor a piecemeal approach that has empowered insurance companies to increase the numbers of uninsured, provide less security for those who are insured, and increase health care costs for all Americans.

But it continues to be clear, and yesterday both parties agreed, that we can no longer defer action on addressing this country's broken health insurance system.

Which is why it's time for Republicans to dig deep and identify areas where agreements can be forged on issues like expanding insurance coverage for the millions who lack it and guaranteeing that all consumers have access to care.

Check out some key moments from this historic meeting, and then pass this along to anyone you know who is interested in the fight for reform:

Yesterday, reporters exposed a confidential Republican National Committee fundraising proposal, uncovering their plan to run "an aggressive campaign capitalizing on 'fear' of President Barack Obama and a promise to 'save the country from trending toward socialism.'"

The memo even included grotesque caricatures of Democratic leaders -- including Speaker Nancy Pelosi as Cruella De Vil and President Obama as the Joker from Batman.

This is the GOP we're now up against: Desperate, shameless, and willing to deceptively play on the worst emotions of people to tear down the President.

We're ready to go toe-to-toe with the GOP. We'll prove that this kind of politics is no match for real grassroots strength and a commitment to making America better -- but we need your help. Please donate $5 or more today to help us fight back.

This past week has brought a barrage of outrageous news about Republican tactics.

Politico is reporting that the same memo outlining their "fear" strategy indicated that the RNC is cynically seeking to further weaken campaign finance reform to up their cash intake.

And National Journal, a Capitol Hill newspaper, found that Republicans are launching robocalls around the country calling health reform "dangerous." These calls are designed to poison the debate around health care at a critical moment -- and are happening right as they hit up insurance company executives for huge contributions.

And to top it off, they're holding an upcoming fundraiser at a compound run by the controversial military contractor formerly known as Blackwater.

Enough is enough. We are ready to fight back with rapid-response teams, truth-telling ads, and the best grassroots organizing anywhere. But we need your help to make it happen. Can you donate $5 or more to help out?

Governor Kaine just recorded a quick video about the President's proposal for real health reform -- and the Republicans who are still standing in the way.

I hope you'll watch it and learn how you can help.

If enacted, the President's proposal would protect Americans from insurance-company abuses, guarantee affordable choices, and reduce the cost of care for businesses, our families, and the government.

But while the need for reform is so obvious to the American people, powerful interests are lined up against it -- including insurance-company lobbyists currently plotting their strategy at the D.C. Ritz-Carlton and Republicans in Congress. And though the President's plan draws from the best ideas of both parties, Republicans continue to say no to reform.

It's clear that Republicans think this is a winning issue for them -- GOP leaders from Michael Steele to Mitch McConnell have said that they will hold Democrats responsible for passing reform come November. Governor Kaine and I sure hope they do, because if they want to campaign on the belief that there is nothing wrong with the way insurance companies currently do business, then that's a fight we Democrats are ready -- and eager -- to have.

Please watch the video today, and see what you can do to help in the final march for reform:

 We need to act.

On Sunday night, many Congressional Democrats in tough districts cast courageous votes for health reform -- even though they knew that insurance companies and their Republican allies would retaliate immediately.

Well, the attacks are here. Shameful, negative ads have already hit the airwaves. Democratic offices have been vandalized. Republicans are promising to repeal reform and smearing those who supported it.

But we're ready to do what it takes to defend the heroes who made health reform possible.

These are the men and women who stood with us and the President to make good on a promise that our Party has fought to deliver for a century. And we will not leave them hanging out to dry.

Please chip in $5 or more to defend those in Congress who fought to make health reform possible?

These are the people who worked hand in hand with President Obama and grassroots Democrats to finally bring affordable coverage to 32 million more Americans, enact the toughest insurance regulations in history, and bring down costs for families, small businesses, and our government.

At a time of historic achievement for our country, Republicans and the extreme right wing are responding by pushing fear and intimidation.

They've launched a campaign to "fire" Nancy Pelosi, complete with imagery of the first female Speaker of the House surrounded by flames. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter had a brick thrown through her office window. A Virginia blog posted Congressman Tom Perriello's home address, urging tea partiers to "drop by."

The Democratic National Committee is already fighting back hard, with a sophisticated ad strategy, events on the ground, and the best rapid-response program in the history of politics. But we need your help to keep it up.

Please chip in $5 or more:

If we learned one thing from the fight for health reform, it's this: Hope can triumph over fear, the truth can beat out the most vicious of lies, and our movement, organized, can overcome even the most powerful of opponents. Let's not stop now.

Thanks,

Governor Tim Kaine
Chairman

We've got a fight on our hands.

The 2010 elections are just six months away, and Republicans are talking up their chances. They're convinced they'll defeat Democrats in Congress, win big majorities, and start rolling back all the progress we've worked so hard to make.

But I've got news for them: Today, Democrats are launching an unprecedented push to defend the President's allies in office and elect some great new Democrats to fight alongside him.

With the help of supporters like you, we'll run the strongest, most sophisticated effort this party has ever put together. And we'll beat back the Republicans.

The President has recorded a message for us Democrats to kick off this campaign. Take a look.

We'll be laying out our strategy for the midterm elections over the next few days. But first, the President wanted to tell you directly what's at stake:

2010. 05. 14-i levél:

This week, when the President first told me he'd chosen Elena Kagan to serve on the Supreme Court, I couldn't help but smile. I had a chance to interview many great candidates, but Elena stood out. I met her nearly 20 years ago, when she took a break from teaching to join my staff in the Senate. She helped us confirm Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and even then, it wasn't hard to picture a day when we'd be helping Elena prepare for confirmation hearings of her own.

Since that time, I've followed her career, and today, I believe Elena Kagan is an inspired choice for the Supreme Court.

Throughout her career, she's been a trailblazer, breaking glass ceilings in both academia and government. She's been a consensus-builder, earning praise for her work with Republicans in the Clinton White House and her support for the free exchange of ideas as the dean of Harvard Law. She's flat-out brilliant, easily one of the best legal minds I've ever met. But most importantly, she's also someone who understands that the application of the law holds real consequences for Americans in all walks of life.

Now her nomination goes to the Senate. I've been through this process more than once, and I've learned that the success of any nomination is strongly influenced by the public response in the first few days.

Will you stand with the President and me to support Elena Kagan? Sign on to help us show that the American people back her nomination.

As a young attorney, Elena clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall. She often calls him her hero. Now, she's following in his footsteps as the Solicitor General of the United States, the chief legal advocate for our government. If Justice Marshall were with us today, I'm sure he'd be proud of the clerk he used to call "Shorty."

To see why, look no further than her role in the Citizens United case. It was a legal battle that most experts agreed would be impossible for the government to win. But as Solicitor General, Elena chose this as her first case. She recognized that rolling back bipartisan election law would allow special interests to dominate campaigns across the country and drown out the voice of the American people. Though she knew she'd probably lose, she chose to make it her fight all the same. That's character.

That kind of decision defines Elena's career. With her resume, she's had no shortage of lucrative opportunities. But her parents were both public servants -- her mother a school teacher and her father a housing lawyer who fought for tenants' rights -- and she has always followed their example. Like her dad, she's used her legal knowledge to serve others, and like her mom, she's been an educator, working to pass her knowledge on to another generation. Now, it's time to bring that heartfelt, principled commitment to the Supreme Court.

In these crucial early days, help us show that public support for this extraordinary nominee is overwhelming:

Thank you,

Vice President Joe Biden

If there's one thing that we learned from 2008, it's that hard-fought
elections are won on the ground. On the doorsteps and the phone lines.
In face-to-face conversations with friends and neighbors. At house
events, where people gather to support a common cause.

That's how we were able to get 15 million people out to vote for the
first time in 2008 -- helping us achieve a victory for the President and
win majorities in Congress.

And this is just what volunteers will be working to do this weekend in
competitive districts across the country: They'll be mobilizing on the
ground for our party-wide "Moving America Forward" Day of Action on
August 28th -- securing commitments to vote and discussing what's at
stake this November.

Our goal is to knock on 200,000 doors in 48 hours -- and we need your help to get it done.

Can you join us? Click here to find an event near you.

It's an ambitious target -- but the doors we'll knock on this weekend
aren't simply tally marks. Those doors open into the homes of Americans
whose lives will be affected by the outcome of this fall's elections.

Each door presents us with the opportunity to secure these folks'
commitment to vote -- and to illustrate how that vote will affect the
direction the country takes.

"Moving America Forward" isn't just a catchy name. It's also our larger message heading into the fall, and for good reason.

Democrats aren't just fighting to protect the historic progress we've
achieved together -- from health insurance reform to the strongest
consumer protections ever put in place -- we're fighting for the
opportunity to continue moving forward with reforms that go to work for
the American people.

Given the opportunity, Republicans would repeal our historic reforms,
taking us backward to Bush-era policies that work only for special
interests and the privileged few. We simply can't let that happen.

This is our chance to make sure it doesn't.

Weekends like this one help us to lay the foundation for victory this
fall -- but we can't get folks to show up at the polls unless we first
show up on the ground.

I hope you can make it out. Sign up to RSVP for an event today:

Jen
